I am a retired senior level power sector professional from State
Electricity Board of Gujarat state with last 26 years spent at State Load Dispatch
Centre (SLDC).

It was a tough job during that time to handle power grid
facing acute shortages and many a time operating below 48 Hz and above 51 Hz
due to limitations of regulating power. Grid system was only up to regional
level having small system bias and low inertia. Scheme like ABT for self
disciplined auto regulation was not yet available. Frequency was hovering to
critical levels. So we had extensive exposure for crisis management including black
start i.e. restoration of power
system from scratch after collapse (blackout) due to cascading.

It was an excellent experience to have creative deliberations
on various matters among experts of CEA, PGCIL, NTPC, NPC, MSEB, CSEB, GOA, UT,
TEC, AEC and Invitees during periodic meets of Operation and Coordination Committee,
Load Generation Balance Committee and Protection Committee.

It was also creative exercise in regional task force
meetings to tackle different problems and derive solutions with implementation
strategy for Activation of Power System Stabilizer, Active Governor Mode Operation
and High Frequency Operation.

It was important assignment to analyze various provisions
for all probabilities and effectiveness and rule out any adverse in task force
meetings for Grid Code for WR, Modality for Performance Based Incentive for Network, Review
of Grid Operation in ABT Regime and Quality Supply and National Grid
Management.
Derived concept of incremental power import rate with effect
of system dynamics in ABT regime. Also developed
and installed task displaying current incremental rate on operators’ console.
This enabled to operate system in most beneficial manner under various operating
conditions.

FTM developed with the ERDA was useful to get frequency oscillations data following disturbance in the
system. Useful to study slow system oscillation characteristic, its dumping, time
period etc.

| Presentation for Students |
It was a time when personal
computers were just introduced and were mainly used in place of type writers to
prepare and store documents and to some extent for preparing data tables in lotus
for reports etc. I tried and was successful to prepare three page logs sheets in lotus
with provision of data integrity check, printing in different styles, derive
summary and transfer to data base with single
click using visual basic and escape sequence printer command in macro
programming. This made it possible to
get various reports of selective data and format for different authorities.
Other small forms were also computerized that automatically reshuffle data periodically
based on date/day as required. This avoided manual error like mutilated, illegible and wrongly entered
data.

It was very good experience of
interaction with people while participating in Seminar/Training by CMC at Hyderabad/Delhi/Bombay,
ABB at Bangalore/Bombay/Vadodara, MACT Bhopal, IIT Bombay, PSTI Bangalore(3
Events), CBIP Chennai, National Conference Vadodara, WREB Bombay, IETE

Though it was different but exciting
and enjoyed working for 2 years with ERDA after retirement for project on agricultural
load survey in Gujarat for coordination amongst field technicians, supervising
officers, DISCOM’s field offices and headquarters for planning, execution,
monitoring, data collection, compilation, summarizing and reporting.
Last lap of 7 years spent as
visiting faculty at engineering college proved significant to bridge the gap
between industries and institutes. Students were well prepared in engineering
theory by regular learned faculty. My part was students’ orientation for
engineering concepts and engineering practice. For me, it was of utmost satisfaction
that I could payback a little to engineering fraternity where I was receiver in
the past.

While contributing as
secretary/committee member of Vadodara SPE(I) and IE(I), it was exciting
experience to handle planning to finish seminars/workshop/training on various
topics at different parts of Gujarat.

I had opportunities to interact
with budding engineers as Expert, Trainer, Guest speaker in STTP, Class, Training, etc and also helping for
project/ thesis/viva/interview etc.

I used to explain my objective that my hard
disc (brain) has huge data (experience) gained over a period of many years. But
now after long service it may fail anytime and as usual is burn and data will
be lost. So desire to have back-up in fresh disc (like you) where data would
remain safe for longer.

It seems rather uncertain as to
when present crises of pandemic will over and routine activities resume. With this
in view and to best use spare time during lockdown, this BLOG is stated with
first post on CORONA.
